Great Lakes Institute of Technology Employment Specialist, Erica Hepler, recently had the chance to catch up with Spring 2014 Medical Office Assistant graduate, Kelly Watrous-Tarbell and here is what she had to say:
EH: How long have you been in your current position?
KWT: I started per diem with Allegheny Health Network / Saint Vincent Hospital in May 2014 and then in the fall of 2014 I was hired full time at Saint Vincent Family Medicine, so I’ve been working in the field for almost two years.
EH: What do you like most about your career?
KWT: That I get to work with a variety of people. I like that there is always more to learn and ways to grow. Thanks to Great Lakes, I believe that I was able to pick up faster on the programs that we use on a daily basis for electronic records. I also was able to handle appropriate situations when needed.
EH: What are your future career goals?
KWT: As far as my future I have some different ideas I'm tossing around. My plan is to continue working with AHN Saint Vincent Hospital but to grow in my department. I continue to learn as much as possible.
EH: Would you give a piece of advice for our current students?
KWT: My advice for current GLIT students is to keep your head up high, you can do anything you put your mind to. When I went to GLIT, I worked a part time job and raised two children. If I can do it, anyone can do it. Learn as much as you can while you are there. If you need help, just ask the teachers. Everyone is willing to help in so many different ways. Good luck!
EH: What do you like to do in your spare time?
KWT: In my spare time, I am with my two daughters busy with dance and softball. I like to be outside doing anything active. I enjoy spending time with my fiance', friends and family. I also like shopping!
