In this Alumni Spotlight we caught up with Jessica Peru, Veterinary Assistant graduate who currently works at the Humane Society of NWPA.
Where have you worked since you graduated and where do you currently work? What is your title?
I did my externship at the Humane Society Veterinary hospital and got hired directly after. I worked there for 10 months and then decided I wanted to become a licensed technician so I went back to college, at The Vet Tech Institute in Pittsburgh, PA.
What type of things do you do there day to day?
Like any normal clinic, we do it all. From nail trims, to blood draws, taking radiographs, restraining, placing catheters, administering and preparing medications and monitoring patients during and after surgery. This doesn't even list half the things a Vet Tech does every day though!
What do you like about your career?
I love being able to meet new people, and animals every day. No day is the same! It's never boring.
What did you like most about Great Lakes?
I loved the teachers! Megan Bell helped me become the Vet Tech that I am today. They were always so helpful and pushed you until you succeeded!
What are your career goals for the future?
My goals are to become an Emergency Vet Tech Specialist after I graduate VTI and get my license and degree. I love fast paced environments!
What advice can you give current students and new graduates that can help them be successful?
Study, Study. Study! Although it seems that graduation is so long away, trust me when I say it flies by. Try your hardest and do the best you can at absolutely everything.
What do you like to do in your free time/any new happenings in your life you want to share?
In my free time I like being outdoors as much as possible, and doing new things. Life is too short to be boring!
