In this Alumni Spotlight we caught up with Hillary Widrig, Diagnostic Medical Sonographer graduate and current employee at WCA Hospital in Jamestown, New York.
Where have you worked since you graduated and where do you currently work? What is your title?
I started working in general ultrasound at WCA Hospital and worked there for a year and a half and then got the opportunity to cross train and learn to do echocardiograms. I have been working full time in the cardiology department for three years and still take calls for general ultrasound at night. My title is Hillary McCandless RDMS (ABD, OB/GYN) RDCS (AE).
What type of things do you do there day to day?
We do adult and pediatric echoes, stress echoes and transesophageal echoes on both inpatients and outpatients.
What do you like about your career?
The challenge of no two patients being the same and discovering new pathology.
What are your career goals for the future?
I hope to get registered in pediatric echo by the middle of next year and then eventually tackle the vascular boards.
What advice can you give current students and new graduates that can help them be successful?
Always be open to change. I was really nervous about leaving my job in general ultrasound and learning something that I didn’t know anything about. It ended up being the best career decision I could have made.
What do you like to do in your free time?
Last month I got married and last year I started my own 3D ultrasound business. In my free time, I love to travel!
