In this Alumni Spotlight we caught up with Bonnie Kowalski, Surgical Technologist graduate who currently works at Lake Health System in Concord, Oh.
Where have you worked since you graduated and where do you currently work? What is your title?
I've worked for The Village Surgery Center in Erie as a surgical tech and Lake Health System in Concord OH. I'm currently still working for Lake Health System at Tripoint Medical Center in Concord OH as a surgical technologist.
What type of things do you do there day to day?
Set up the OR suite for the surgical cases. Set up and assist the surgeons during surgical procedures. Maintain sterility and aseptic technique throughout a case and assist with the transport of patients and putting the patients needs first. I anticipate the surgeons needs throughout a surgical case and I'm prepared for every situation that may occur. I'm the first person to scrub into the case, and the last one to scrub out of the surgery to insure the patient receives the utmost care during their surgery.
What do you like about your career?
Every day, every procedure, every patient is different. Its never the same. I love the challenge and knowing my set of skills can make a difference in the lives of every patient I see.
What did you like most about Great Lakes?
The small classroom sizes. Receiving vital one on one training and having the support of my fellow classmates and instructors. If I didn't have that, I wouldn't be where I am today.
What are your career goals for the future?
My career goals are to continue my training and schooling to become a surgical first assistant.
What advice can you give current students and new graduates that can help them be successful?
Do not ever be afraid to ask questions! You are an integral part of the surgical team so knowing is better than guessing. Do what you love and love what you do! It truly is a rewarding career!
What do you like to do in your free time/any new happenings in your life you want to share?
In my free time, I spend time with my supportive husband and my 2 amazing little girls who have always been my rock!
