In this Alumni Spotlight we caught up with Angela Artz, Dental Assistant graduate who currently works at Spa Dental Center in Cambridge Springs, PA.
Where have you worked since you graduated and where do you currently work? What is your title?
I did my 5 week externship at Spa Dental Center in Cambridge Springs, PA. I was hired 2 weeks before the end of my 5 week externship. I still work for Spa Dental Center! I mainly work at the front desk, but on busy days I jump to the back as a Dental Assistant.
What type of things do you do there day to day?
Answer phones, confirm patients, collections, and scheduling / clean instruments, take radiographs, set up rooms, pour and trim study models.
What do you like about your career?
What I love the most about my career is that I work for a Dentist who owns their own business. I don’t have to worry about a big corporation. We all work together well and know each other. We all go together to seminars and have fun get togethers.
What did you like most about Great Lakes?
What I love most about attending Great Lakes, is how fun but also educational it was. The instructors made it fun and challenging. They both had different teaching skills. Calista was more strict, and demanding. Rick was more little laid back. I think it is important to have both types of instructors because all Doctors are different.
What are your career goals for the future?
I plan on getting my CDA in two more years then moving on to EFDA school in Pittsburgh or Ohio. Then I plan on being the only other EFDA that this office has had.
What advice can you give current students and new graduates that can help them be successful?
Keep trying, don’t give up! The classes may be hard at times, but it’s definitely worth it in the end!
What do you like to do in your free time/any new happenings in your life you want to share?
I would like to share one very important part of my life that I feel Great Lakes had a part in. Before I enrolled in Great Lakes, I was working at O’Reilly Auto Parts making $8.25 per hour. My Fiance and our two toddler boys were living in his Grandma’s basement that he partly refinished for us to live in. We were living there because we were not able to afford somewhere to live on our own. After going to Great Lakes and landing an amazing job, we now have our own newly remodeled apartment in Cranesville PA. We were able to purchase another vehicle for the both of us, and we purchased a 4 wheeler for the boys to have fun on. We are getting married next month, our credit scores are going up, and hopefully after 5 years we will be able to get our own home. Going to Great Lakes really gave me a head start on my career and education, and I couldn’t be thankful enough!
