In this Alumni Spotlight we caught up with Allison Doorn, Veterinary Assistant and current employee at Natural Animal Veterinary Clinic in Union City.
What type of things do you do in your career day to day?
Things I do everyday at work include, answering the phones, scheduling appointments, checking in appointments, assisting in surgery, assisting the vet when needed, I've done several blood draws, and lots of cleaning.
What do you like about your career?
What I like the most about my career is it's never the same. Even days with just a simple routine vaccine can quickly turn into something non-routine. Everyday is something different, and you never stop learning.
What did you like most about Great Lakes?
What I liked most about Great Lakes was the shelter days. When working in a Vet Clinic you're more likely to see those types of dogs and cats versus a student's well behaved pet.
What are your career goals for the future?
My career goals include finishing my current schooling through San Juan College in New Mexico so I can be a Nationally Registered Vet Tech.
What advice can you give current students and new graduates that can help them be successful?
The best advice to give current students and new graduates would be start somewhere small, or volunteer at shelters. Even if the job isn't what you want, it can open all new doors you've never seen before.
What do you like to do in your free time/any new happenings in your life you want to share?
Things I like to do in my free time include, still hula hooping (just like when I attended GLIT) and spending time with my children and pets.
