Medical Assistant Students Visit Northwest Savings Bank Health Expo

Posted On 4/16/2013

Medical Assistant students visited Northwest Savings bank in Erie PA for the annual Health Expo they have for their employees. Students performed blood pressure checks as well as blood glucose tests. They also educated employees of the importance in getting these two things checked regularly.

Students stressed that it is important to get your blood pressure checked regularly, especially if your doctor recommends it. There are certain factors that can cause blood pressure to temporarily rise. For example, blood pressure normally rises as a result of stress, smoking, cold temperatures, exercise, caffeine, and certain medicines. Try to avoid as many of these factors as you can when getting your blood pressure taken. High blood pressure can damage your heart and brain and cause severe health problems.

A blood glucose test measures the type of sugar, called glucose, in your blood. Glucose comes from carbohydrate foods. It is the main source of energy used by the body. The purpose of this test is to check for diabetes, monitor treatment of diabetes, or to determine if an abnormally low blood sugar level is present.

Our medical assistant students have been through enough training that they can educate the public and offer ways to better ones' health. Staff and students, as well as Northwest Savings Bank employees, had a successful day in the world of healthcare! If you are interested in becoming a medical assistant, contact us today!
