Mya Williamson knew she wanted a change in her life. Her position at a supermarket wasn't fulfilling, and she felt she wanted a career where she could help people and be in a position that felt meaningful. As a first step, Mya decided to enroll in the Medical Assistant program at Great Lakes Institute of Technology.

During her nine-month program, Mya was a diligent student. Her instructors say that Mya was always on time and always ready to learn. Lori King, Clinical Instructor, says "Mya was one of the most prepared and eager students in her class." Ms. Hinson, Medical Assistant Program Director states, "Mya's dedication to her new profession really started to emerge when she began her externship at Great Lakes Neurosurgery, which is part of UPMC Hamot."

Mya did such a terrific job at her externship that the office manager, Mina Morales, offered her a full time position. Now an employee, Mya says, "I am very happy here at Great Lakes Neurosurgery. Mina Morales has definitely made me feel like part of the team, not to mention the surgeons here are very friendly, outgoing people. Going back to school was one of the best decisions I made with my life. Great Lakes helped me make this possible."
