Calista has been the Program Director of the Dental Assistant department for three years. Her next career goal is to become an Expanded Function Dental Assistant. She is currently in her second semester at Westmoreland County Community College and doing her preceptorship at Hammerlee Dental Care. Read about what Calista had to say below:
When you're a student, you want to have an instructor who is driven, passionate, and someone who envisions your success story. You want an instructor who can lead a classroom and share real-life experiences. This is what I believe I bring to our Dental Assistant program.
Before joining Great Lakes, I worked for ten years as a Dental Assistant, spending most of my time assisting in general dentistry and oral maxillofacial surgery. During my preceptorship, I will be doing amalgam and composite restorations (fillings), coronal polishing, sealants, fabrication of mouth guards and temporary crowns and bridges.
I take pride in giving our students their best shot at a new career and molding them into an intelligent professional. We have an opportunity to empower someone who may have had a difficult life, watch them find employment, and become successful. That is rewarding and worth everything I put into the Dental Assistant program.
I am very proud of our team of instructors and this program because we focus in on each specialty: endodontics, oral surgery, orthodontics, pediodontics, and periodontics. We bring in guest speakers and take field trips and I feel confident that a graduate can start a career in the specialty of their choice. I am extremely proud of our students 100% pass rate for the Dental Assisting National Boards Radiology Health and Safety Exam, and our high Infection Control Exam pass rate!
Several dental offices in the area look for our students to hire, and because of this we have maintained an extremely high placement rate for the past three years.
