Graduate Success Stories - Mariya Otroda - Dental Assistant Graduate

Posted On 10/11/2011

Mariya Otroda is a recent graduate of the Dental Assistant program at Great Lakes Institute of Technology. In 2001 Mariya, her parents, and her 2 brothers came to the United States from Lyutsk, Ukraine. She graduated from East High School in 2009.

Mariya always knew that she wanted to be involved with dentistry. After touring Great Lakes, she was even more convinced this was the right career choice. She was "hooked" once she saw the Dental Assistant Clinical Lab classrooms at the school. Mariya stated "the financial aid and admissions staff along with the teachers made me feel important, like they really cared about my future. I felt right at home talking to all of them." Immediately after completing her externship at Family Dental Care with Dr. Nicole Johnson she was hired on permanently. Dr. Johnson was thrilled to add Mariya to the staff, saying that "she was such a good assistant I didn’t want to let someone else hire her; I wanted her working for us."

Mariya feels that attending Great Lakes Institute of Technology truly changed her life. She says that Great Lakes gave her the skills she needed to have a career she enjoys. "Attending school and learning in a small classroom gave me the confidence that I needed. I was very shy and felt intimidated in large groups. With a smaller group, I felt that I could speak up and ask questions and this helped give me a better education."

Mariya's family is very proud of her accomplishments. They were glad that she got her education in a short time period and did not have to leave home to get specialized training.

Mariya is happily still working with the staff at Family Dental Care. "I love coming to work every day. The best part of my day is seeing the smiles on the patient's faces." Mariya has continued to stay involved at Great Lakes, now as a member of the school’s Program Advisory Committee. She is always happy to tell others how attending Great Lakes and working hard at her externship landed her a wonderful career.
