EIT Completes Training for NWIRC
Erie Institute of Technology has just concluded a one-hundred-four hour Basic Machining Technology training course for two groups of employees from local industries. In addition, a third group was trained on just the Machining portion of the course. Students attended classes in Blueprint Reading, Shop Math, Inspection and Measurement Techniques, and Manufacturing Processes and Tooling.

The project was funded through the Regional Center for Workforce Excellence and coordinated by the Northwest Industrial Resource Center. The Northwest IRC developed the curriculum from input from local employers. Thirty students from twelve regional employers attended classes in the afternoon and evening from June through the end of July.

The training will benefit employees just entering manufacturing jobs by giving them the basic skills they need. Existing employees benefit by refreshing and improving their existing skills, and learning new ones. Employees can then use their upgraded knowledge and skills to promote themselves within their organization.

Congressman Phil English Holds Press Conference at EIT

English teams up with Democratic Leadership to advance bill to extend unemployment benefits.  Jobless workers need help during economic slowdown.

H.R. 5749, the Emergency Extended Unemployment Compensation Act, provides immediate assistance to jobless workers who continue to suffer from the lagging economy and unemployment.  This would provide an additional 13 weeks of unemployment benefits for jobless workers that have exhausted state and federal benefits in states with high unemployment rates, through January 2009.  These benefits would be paid out of the federal unemployment trust funds, which now have over $35 billion in reserves.

Mr. English was introduced by EIT Executive Director, Tony Piccirillo.  A large group of students and staff from EIT were on hand to hear the Congressman’s remarks.  Reporters and camera crews from WJET, FOX66, and WICU covered the event.
