The Health Information Technology program is designed to provide the knowledge and hands on skills necessary to obtain entry level employment in the health care field in areas of health information technology, medical billing and coding, medical records, and medical office assistants.
The graduate will be prepared to accept entry‐level positions in the field of health information technology with physician offices, specialty medical offices, health care facilities, out‐patient facilities, ambulatory surgical centers, hospitals, insurance companies, third‐party payers, or self‐employment. Job titles may include Health Information Technician, Medical Records Technician, Records Clerk, Coding/Billing Specialist. Students will additionally have the skills necessary to accept positions such as Medical Office Assistant or Medical Secretary, where the primary responsibility is billing, coding, or record keeping.
Graduates of the HIT program are also eligible to sit for the Certified Coding Associate (CCA) credential offered by American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or the Certified Patient Account Technician (CPAT) exam given by the American Association of Healthcare Administrative Management (AAHAM), although it is strongly recommended graduates obtain work experience prior to taking these certification exams. The CCA and CPAT certifications are optional and are taken at the student’s expense. Note: Graduates are not eligible to sit for the RHIT exam through AHIMA.
