70-week diploma program (day)
Diagnostic medical sonographers, also known as ultrasonographers or ultrasound technicians, use special equipment to direct high frequency sound waves into areas of the patient’s body. Viewing the screen during the scan, sonographers look for subtle visual cues that contrast healthy areas with unhealthy ones. They decide whether the images are satisfactory for diagnostic purposes and select which ones to show to the Radiologist.
College-level prerequisites in English/Communication, Biology/Biological Sciences, and Physics, as well as high school Algebra, are required. These are in addition to the program of study and must be successfully completed before acceptance into the program. These courses are available at Great Lakes.
Your initial classroom and clinic training will include ultrasound physics and instrumentation, anatomy & physiology, sectional anatomy, ultrasound imaging, ultrasound case studies, patient interaction, and obstetric & reproductive ultrasound. The final 35 weeks of training will be an externship at a regional hospital or medical imaging facility.
